Originally from Belfast, Heather McAteer is a visual artist who creates works on paper which investigate themes of identity, memory and history. She works predominately in graphite to produce evocative drawings which harness the visual power of light and shadow. Aided by this limited palette, the images exist in a liminal space, hovering between the familiar and alien. Her recent works depict beautiful, cruel landscapes suffused with a melancholic sense of loss and absence. They attempt to reconcile ideas of place and home, in terms of longing and belonging, and are a mediation on youth, memory and mortality.
