Martin Stubbington

I am an artist interested in creating work for public and unused spaces. In 2010 I worked in community regeneration for the council, where I discovered and interned with Jelly. Working with them and putting art installations into empty shop windows gave me the motivation and passion for creating street art and utilizing neglected spaces.
Plants, animals and pattern feature heavily in my work, which sometimes incorporates other elements but the nature theme is a core part in my art.

My personal aim as an artist is to bring nature to cities and urban environments through my drawings. I am also interested in letting the public see work in progress, going on a journey with the piece as it develops and changes. In the past couple of years I have been doing ‘live drawing’ in venues around Reading. Currently at the new Jelly studio space at Jackson’s Corner, I have been experimenting with techniques, materials and different wall surfaces. I have been gradually building up a body of work, comprising of art on walls during this period of experimentation, and I enjoy developing my work this way.
You can find all of my work in progress and completed pieces on my facebook page: www.facebook.com/thenightmonkey

“The public needs art – and it is the responsibility of a ‘self proclaimed artist’ to realize that the public needs art, and not to make bourgeois art for a few and ignore the masses.” – Keith Haring
