I am a practising artist based in the Jelly Studios in Reading. I studied at The Slade School of Art in London in the 1990’s and since graduating I have been a practising artist and art teacher. My work represents an on-going endeavour to explore and understand the nature of place and in recent years I have been drawn to the landscape and coastline of Dorset. Through drawing from life I begin to build a language of marks that seek the abstract qualities within the landscape, its local landmarks, the sea, nature and geology.

I record through watercolour, pastel, ink, charcoal and collage. These drawings are used as the basis for a variety of prints, such as monoprint collages, lino, chine colle and collagraph prints. In which I seek to combine abstract flatness against more complex form and shape, collage against printed surfaces and to the interplay between vivid and muted colours.

Drawings are also used to develop ideas into ceramics. At the moment I am working on a second ceramics collection called ‘Aloft’ which I have made in conjunction with ceramicist David Pope. This collection was conceived through drawings I produced from an aeroplane above Southern England that captured the structures of fields, furrows and tramlines. The glaze is applied like paint and a series of ink paintings also accompany the ceramics. The influences that have shaped my ideas are Japanese ceramics and traditional Chinese landscape paintings. The paintings suggesting the feeling of flying above the earth like a bird and I used locally sourced feathers collected from swans nesting at the mouth of the River Kennett. I felt this brought the idea that had started above the earth back home.

I am genuine, thoughtful, hardworking, reflective, intuitive and playful. My work captures a moment, is joyful, surreal, exciting, colourful, contemporary, large, and referential. It seeks to distort scale and offers the viewer a complete range of subtle complexities. I enjoy using a range of materials, processes and experimentation and the work is both spontaneous and sustained. I seek a harmony through balancing subject, process, texture, colour, depth and meaning.
