kate&anna is made up of me, Kate Powell, and Anna Williams, who I met during university doing a drama degree and in a desperate bid to save ourselves from acting we ended up together in the set design workshop, our friendship was sealed, and our enjoyment of making things began. The ambition to start our own business has been with us since first meeting and in 2009 we finally unveiled our first collection as (brace yourself for the innovation) kate&anna.
We are designer/makers who are traditionally trained in fine carpentry and upholstery as well as a variety of modern techniques for making things, mainly for interiors but whatever takes our fancy really. Anna completed a diploma in Fine Carpentry at the Stratford Building Crafts College and I started at HND in Furniture Design and Realisation and Post Graduate Certificate in Design at the former London College of Furniture now London Metropolitan University and most recently trained in upholstery there.
Anna is based in Bedford so it is me, as Reading is my home, who is more involved with the work that jelly do. I started to work with jelly during Open For Art 2014 and haven’t looked back since. Having grown up in Reading I have always been aware of jelly and used to wander around their first shop as a surly teenager pleased to find somewhere in Reading that celebrates individuality and creativity as much as they do and they haven’t changed. Thank fully I have, I am a lot less surly.
I have been running workshops, both for children and adults, for jelly. Quilting, cushion making and Off the Grid Family Art Club and generally getting stuck in with any suitable projects that come my way.
It’s an inspiring place to be, full of inspirational people and being surrounded by that fuels your own creativity, whatever form that may take.
