Open for Art is just one of many events delivered by Jelly. As recognition for our work, last year we were awarded The Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service (The ‘MBE’).  We aim to make everything we do free, accessible, and available to those restricted by social and economic reasons. Projects would not happen, nor would we reach as many people, without the support we receive. From businesses to individuals; volunteers to donations: every contribution matters. To support our work please get in touch. Email belong@jelly.org.uk, or visit jelly.org.uk/supporting-jelly

Justine has written a piece about the importance of these friendships and the creativity that comes from being part of Jelly.

A Yorkshireman in Reading
Meet Simon Mayor (writer and mandolin virtuoso) and Hilary James (vocalist and illustrator) with their first book of augmented reality, poems and anecdotes ‘Of Death And A Banana Skin’. Simon extolls the delights of his native Yorkshire and shares his enthusiasm for Reading, his adopted home. Hilary, best known for her ‘elegant’ singing and unusual taste in bass instruments, provides lively illustrations and animations. Simon’s four Reading sonnets: The Abbey, Reading Gaol, The Oracle and Queen Victoria Street appear alongside a host of humorous poems, limericks and anecdotes. All this is wrapped up in a delicious mix of music and song – sweetly sung folksongs to 1930s hot swing fiddle, blues, ragtime and classical mandolin showstoppers.

Hello and welcome to Jelly

Jelly is an energetic charity championing the creative arts. We have played a strategic role in Reading’s cultural life since 1993 – enabling art to appear in unexpected places and creating opportunities for people to look on and join in. We believe in the power of the arts to delight, intrigue, challenge and enrich, and we’re committed to forming creative alliances and partnerships that encourage art and cultural life to flourish.

See below to book workshops and  for more information about our events – we hope to see you soon.

Opening of Reading Abbey – join our procession

Jelly are celebrating the opening of Reading Abbey on Saturday 16 June with an artistic animal procession at 2.30 to 3.30pm.

We have been running a series of workshops making animal masks, capturing the imagination of young children through art, inspired by the song ‘Sumer is Icumen in’ – the earliest known copy of the song’ manuscript was founded at Reading Abbey.

The finale of this project culminates in a procession from Forbury Gardens to the Abbey.

Meet us at the Jelly Marquee (in Forbury Gardens) at 2.30pm on Saturday 16 June with your masks, made from previous sessions or by following our guide to make your own below. Follow the Jelly Team through Forbury Gardens and ending up at the Abbey.

Download our ‘how to’ guide > here <

We look forward to welcoming you all.

Note: there won’t be any mask making on the day of the parade but you can still join in by making your own mask by downloading our ‘how to’ guide here or join us from 11am to 2pm on Saturday 16 June in Forbury Gardens where we will be making willow streamers.

ArtLine – Broad Street Art Market, Sun 8 July – applications open

ArtLine, Broad Street Art Market, Reading, Sun 8 July 11am – 4pm

New for 2018 and as part of Jelly’s 5thyear of Open for Art and its Silver Jubilee, a new visual arts street market showcasing the work of local artists for sale will be launched.

Presented by Reading Business Improvement District with Jelly’s Open for Art, this event aims to attract people to Reading and support the town centre economy while profiling Reading as a cultural destination supporting a strong artistic community.

Supported by arts organisations locally the works exhibited will show a wide range of the quality work created in Reading. Work can be paintings, original photography, drawings, limited edition prints, hanging textiles (other artworks by agreement with the organisers). The event is not curated and artists must be selling and exhibiting their own work.

ArtLine will consist of a line of 3m x 3m gazebos stretching down Broad Street (with appropriate gaps for access as required) and within each gazebo, heras fencing on which artists can attach their work. Each gazebo will house 4 artists, two each side of the fencing – each pitch is 1.5m in length and 2m high. Floor space under the gazebo must be clear for the public to get close to the artwork, with the exception of a chair and browser by agreement with the organisers.

Footfall on Sundays in Broad Street is 65,000 and we want to fill the street with artists. The event will be managed by Jelly volunteers and the artist fee is subsidised to allow this to be as affordable as possible with no commission on sales.

The gazebo and fencing will be installed by the organisers and pitches allocated to artists. The organisers will also provide indemnity, trading licence for the event plus signage, promotional materials and artists lanyard.

Fee for taking part is £50 per artist (£40 for any bookings paid by 27 April). Maximum number of artists for this event is 60.

To take part, download the application form if you need a Word version please email kate@jelly.org.uk
