Autumn term at Jelly

This term sees the return of our popular Jelly Family Art Club which run the third Saturday of each month, along with our regular Knit Night on Wednesdays and Life Drawing classes on Sundays for adults. We also have special events coming up. First up is an exhibition in our ‘Conversation’ gallery space called Words and Stitches which will feature knitted, crochet and fibre arts. In October we have a special children’s event (also taking place globally) on the 7 October called the Cardboard Challenge.

Friendly untutored life drawing class running every sunday from 10am to 1:30pm.

Very welcoming to new members whether a professional artist, student or keen hobbyist. We use a variety of different models that we rotate every week to keep things feeling fresh and interesting.

Jelly Tots Play – Pre-school Art Club
suitable for ages 18 months to 5 years | every Wednesday 10.30am to 11.30am (starting 13 Sept) | price: £4

Join us at Jelly’s for a creative colourful morning of craft. This session allows you and your tot to explore and experiment with art materials and techniques such as painting, printing and collage.

Jelly Tots is a pre school art club led by artists and designers, for children from 18 months to up to 5 yrs. With over 20 years combined experience between them and creative skills ranging from fine art to fashion design and textiles to theatre, our fantastic team run a programme of creative workshops that encourage your child (and you) to join in, learn, make, be creative and play together.

Knit Night
Adult workshop | every Wednesday 6.30pm to 8pm | price: free with a 50p recommended donation

A group for knitter and crochets to meet and work on their latest creations. A chance to join in, chat and share knitting ideas. This is not a taught session but there is always helpful knitters around if you are stuck on a pattern or need inspiration.

This knitting group have been meeting since 2003 and hold regular yarn sales. See Facebook page for announcements

Jelly Family Art Club
suitable for 2 years and older | third Saturday of every month, starting 16 September 3pm to 4.30pm | price from £6.00 to £7.50

Join us on the third Saturday of each month in our gallery, artist studios and workshop space within Broad Street Mall for our Jelly Family Art Club with Reading artist and arts educator Julie Calce as we celebrate the art of recycling and collaborative art making.

Every third Saturday you and your child will be encouraged to explore imaginary worlds and characters through a range of changing art themes.

September 16 – fabric mache dolls
October 21 – marionette monsters
November 18 – board game design/making
December 16 – Christmas T-shirt design/making

Julie is a mixed media artists and specialises in working with paper, paper mache and textiles. She loves drawing and is influenced by illustration and nature. Julie is an experienced arts educator and has a fun and playful approach to allow creativity to flourish.

Booking essential as a popular class and we may not be able to accept drop ins on the day. Start time 3pm.

Words and Stitches launch night and private view

A display of conversations with knitting.

Join us for a Special Knit Night & Private View of “Words & Stitches” – our first curated exhibition, presenting glimpses into our more intrinsic relationships and conversations with the act of knitting, as well as crochet and other fibre arts. – i.e. an evening with friends, cake, conversation and cavorting with fibre!

Words and Stitches Exhibition (Saturdays & Sundays)
23 & 24 September, 10am – 4pm and 30 Sep & 1 October, 10am – 4pm | price: free

Join us at Jelly for a double-weekend of hand-knitted delights presenting glimpses into our more intrinsic relationships and conversations with the act of knitting, crochet and other fibre arts. This display of working projects and words from the makers reveal techniques and processes as well as deeper connections with everyday life.

For those who also like to be more hands-on we have activities with yarn such as pom-pom making, woolly collage, knitting demonstrations and samples to fondle!

AND… On Saturday 30 September, 11am–12.30pm there will be a free Creative Writing Workshop with Helen Dahlke offering insights into the creative making/thought processes.

Cardboard challenge aka ‘Thinking Beyond the Box’
suitable for 2 years and older | 7 October 9.30am to 4.30pm (1hr 30mins time slots bookable throughout the day) | price from: £6 to £7.50 per child

Come and celebrate children’s creativity and take part in a global cardboard challenge! Discover the amazing power of imagination and have fun making anything from a giraffe to a robot. What will you make? The sky’s the limit!

These workshops have been organised in response to the global cardboard challenge to celebrate creativity in young people. Use the hashtag #cardboardchallenge to find out what others have made across the world. Today’s sessions are hosted by volunteer Jelly artists and funds raised will be used for Jelly’s arts educational programme.
