SMART 2012, Festival of Sport, Music and Art, River Thames

Alongside members of the Reading 2012 Partnership Board and many of the local organisers of the event, we attended the launch of SMART 2012, a Festival of Sport, Music and Art on the River Thames (SMART) which will take place on Super Saturday, 4th August 2012.

A free family festival developed by the 2012 Partnership Board, SMART will be a celebration of sport, music and art for the community to take part in and come along to the Thames on ‘Super Saturday’, the middle weekend of the Olympic Games.

SMART 2012 will be sited on Thameside Promenade, running from Reading Rowing Club, along to  Rivermead Leisure Complex, and also on the other side of the Thames in  Caversham Court Gardens.

The SMART event will be a free event and has been developed in partnership between the 2012 Partnership Board,  Jelly, Culturemix, Reading Rock Academy, Reading Rowing Club, Friends of Caversham Court Gardens and Rivermead Leisure Complex.

Leading up to the event there will be a number of arts and music led activities which will take place in  schools, in the local community and at other events to engage the community.

The event will run from 11am-6pm, with a further evening event at 7pm,  in Rivermead. During the day the event will celebrate sport, music and art in Reading with a Sporting Village and demonstrations, Community Group stalls, Creative Village, Acoustic Stage and Workshop Area, Open Air Arena,  Main Stage, Traylens Funfair, Food Stalls,  and a big Screen.

In the evening, The Battle of the School Bands (BOTSB), which is a ticketed event, will be showcasing school age bands from Berkshire, Buckinghamshire, Oxfordshire and Hampshire.

Jelly will be there with a mini Aunt Elsie's crew creating all day in the workshop marquee and before the event we will be running a number of workshops in schools, please contact us for more information.

Zac Purchase MBE, the reigning Olympic and World Champion in the lightweight double scull and member of the London 2012 GB rowing team said, “It is my pleasure to be supporting SMART, an event that truly captures the community spirit of Super Saturday. This middle weekend of the London 2012 Games is particularly special for me because it will mark the culmination of the rowing events, but it is also an important opportunity for communities to join together to celebrate the many events that will be taking place. SMART is the ideal event for people to attend, to take part in the raft of sports, music and arts activities that are being held at Thameside Prom. As an athlete, there’s nothing better than to see how London 2012 is manifesting itself within the community, and SMART encapsulates that perfectly.”

Suzanne Stallard, of the Jelly said  “We are delighted to be taking part in this celebration of Sports, Music and Art from Reading and are looking forward to working with the community before the event and on the day on creative arts projects"

The SMART 2012 organising committee would like to thank Festival Republic, Reading Borough Council and Earley Charities for their support of the event.
