We need YOU to make something big happen

Some of you who have been around in Reading for a long time will know that jelly started in an empty shop due for demolition in 1993. In two weeks that space had changed, we turned it round and opened the doors of what was the first of our gallery spaces. From there we have spent the next 18 years in temporary spaces, using shop windows, pop-up venues, studios, workshops, homes with slightly longer leases. Today we have a home that we share with many other arts organisations, individuals and creatives. (if you have never been, it’s at 42 Market Place and it’s where things happen).

Now we have been lucky enough to have been given a Tenancy at Will through one of our main supporters, Brook Henderson Estates at 29-31 Market Place.

The venue is known as The Coopers Arms and we are proposing to turn it into a community space. We will use it for the outside:inside festival, to house artists works, to rehearse, for performances and theatre to be made, for pop-up shops and fairs, for workshops, for studios but to get this thing kick started we really need your help.

We are planning 4 cleaning and painting days, we need as much help as possible so we can make the current ground floor and the first floor usuable (we will worry about the rest once we have these spaces open)

The dates are:

Thursday 30 June

Friday 1 July

Monday 4 July

Tuesday 5 July

We need to clean the space, get it functioning and a good lick of paint.

We also need expert help so we are looking for a plumber (to turn the water on, check the toilets over), an electrician (to make sure all the electrics are in working order) and a fire assessor so we can work out what we need to do to make it compliant.

We will also need cleaning products, paint (white matt emulsion for internal walls and masonry paint for external walls).

One of jelly’s good friends, Pete Doyle of Reading Rock Academy talks about his projects being people powered and this time we really do need people power. Please come and join us and make something big happen for Reading.

Please sign up by emailing suzanne@jelly.org.uk if you can come or donate.

Hey guys. Congratulations. Whilst I won’t be able to help in body from all the way over here in northern Ireland, I will definitely be there in spirit. Phenomenal what you’re doing. A real inspiration to us all. Hope it all goes well and you get the people you need. Love to you all. Inga xxxx
